    Bildpaar 9: Machapuchra. Blickrichtung N; Lok.
 Pokhara; Basis ca. 150 m. Eine Zwischen-Station von Kath-
 mandu nach Tansen ist Pokhara, neben Kathmandu das zweite
 Touristen-Zentrum Nepals. Pokhara ist eine Kleinstadt,
 berühmt wegen seiner Lage in einem Tal mit See, direkt
 südlich des Machapuchra, d.h. "Fischschwanz", den Sie im
 Bilde sehen. Wegen der großen Stereo-Basis sind nur die
 Berge im Hintergrund räumlich zu sehen, der Vordergrund muß
 völlig ignoriert werden!
    Der Machapuchra ist einer der Gipfel E' des schon er-
 wähnten Kali Gandaki-Tales. Obwohl er mit 6993 m nicht
 einmal zu den "Siebentausendern" zählt, wurde er noch nie
 bestiegen. Alle Besteigungs-Versuche endeten mit Todes-
 fällen, bis das ganze Gebiet von der Regierung gesperrt
 wurde. Die Aufnahme entstand aus ca. 20 km Entfernung von
 den sog. snowpeaks, d.h. Schnee-Gipfeln. Die gleichen
 Gipfel sind auch vom Kartiergebiet aus ca. 70 km Entfernung
 zu sehen - leider existiert keine Aufnahme von dort.


    Bildpaar 10: Bushaltestelle Bartung. Blickrichtung
 315°, Basis ca. 40 cm, Lokalität ca. 100 m SSE' BSB. Mit
 der Bushaltestelle Bartung ist die Reise im Kartiergebiet
 angelangt. Bartung liegt an der Straße von Pokhara nach
 Butwal. Von hier geht ein Abzweiger ca. 4 km den Berg hin-
 auf nach Tansen, dem Ziel der Reise, wo ich dann 4 Monate
 wohnen sollte. Bartung ist eine typische Bushaltestelle
 der Überlandstraße. In den Buden gibt es Tee und Imbiss,
 oder auch Reis.
    Auf dem Bild ist ein Gestein des Kartiergebietes zu
 sehen, eine weicher, gelb verwitternder Tonschiefer, in den
 sich leicht die Bauplätze für die Häuser hineinhacken
 lassen.


    Bildpaar 11: Bushaltestelle Tansen. Nach ca. 20 Min.
 Busfahrt und ca. 600 m Höhenunterschied von Bartung aus
 gelange ich endlich in Tansen an, dem Ziel der Reise. Sie
 sehen eines Fahrzeuge an der Bushaltestelle Tansen. Es ist
 typisch für die Fahrzeuge, die von Tansen aus die
 ungeteerte Neubaustrecke nach Riri Bazar am Kali Gandaki
 fahren. Außer derartigen geländetüchtigen
 Fahrzeugen können dort nur Traktoren verkehren.



    Bildpaar 12: Blick nach SE über Tansen. Lokalität km
 C 0.100, Blickrichtung 150°, Basis ca. 3 m. Tansen hat ca.
 10000 Einwohner und ist Distrikt-Hauptstadt des Palpa-Dis-
 trikts. Ich fand eine sehr schöne Wohnung in einem Haus am
 Hang überhalb der Stadt. Sie sehen die Aussicht nach SE
 hinunter auf die Stadt. Tansen ist eine Bergstadt mit sehr
 steilen Wegen, es gibt nur 2 ebene Plätze, der eine in der
 Mitte der Stadt mit den Regierungs-Gebäuden des Distrikts
 (großes viereckiges Gebäude), der andere weiter unten mit
 der Bushaltestelle (verdeckt).

    Picture-pair 9: Machapuchra. View_direction: north;
 locality: Pokhara; stereo-basis: about 150 m. One of the
 stations of the trip from Kathmandu to Tansen is Pokhara,
 besides Kathmandu the second tourist center of Nepal.
 Pokhara is a small town, famous because its situation in
 a valley with a lake, directly south of the Machapuchra,
 the "Fish Tail", which is visible in this picture. Because
 of the exaggerated stereo-basis only the mountains in the
 background are visible space related, the foreground must
 be entirely ignored.
    The Machapuchra is one of the peaks east of the Kali
 Gandaki_Valley. Although it is "only" 6993 m high, its top
 was never reached by mountain-climbers. All attempts of
 climbing it ended with the death of the climbers, until the
 whole region was restricted by the government.
    This exposure is taken from about 20 km south of the
 snowpeaks. The same snowpeaks are visible from the mapping
 area, about 70 km south of them. Unfortunately exists no
 picture from there.


    Picture-pair 10: Busstop Bartung. View direction 315
 degree; stereo-basis about 40 cm; locality: about 100 m SSE
 of the busstop. With the busstop Bartung, the trip reached
 the mapping_area. Bartung is at the road from Pokhara to
 Butwal. From here a road branches off, 4 km uphill to
 Tansen. Bartung is a typical busstop of the cross-country
 road. In the shops chiya and snacks are available, also
 rice at certain times.
    On the pictur the first rock type of the mapping area is
 visible, the "Bartung Shale" (bsh), a soft, yellow
 weathering shale, into which typically the places for
 house constructions are chopped.


    Picture-pair 11: Busstop Tansen. After a 20 minutes bus
 trip from Bartung I finally reached Tansen, the destination
 of the journey, where I should live then for 4 month. You
 see one of the vehicles at the busstop Tansen. It is typical
 for the cars, which go from Tansen further NE, the not
 metalled road to Riri Bazar at the Kali Gandaki. Beside
 those suited for cross country cars, only tractors are
 able to frequent.

 Tansen has about 10000 inhabitants, it is district capital
 of the Palpa District. I found a very nice lodge in a house
 above the town, with a view shown in this picture. Tansen
 is a hill town with very steep ways; there are only two
 flat places, the one in the center of the town, with the
 buildings of the district government (the square building
 in the picture), the other one is the place with the
 busstop below (not visible in the picture).
